High school basketball: Mountain Crest beats Maple Mountain

On the first day of school, students enrolled in Nebo’s building construction class leave the school grounds and head to an empty lot at 1073 West River Ridge Lane, Spanish Fork, UT 84660. At that time, there was nothing but brown grass and some sage brush. Now, seven months later, there is a beautiful 3,876 foot house that is close to completion.
On Tuesday, February 22, Maple Mountain Lady Golden Eagles beat Westlake in the 1st round of the 4A basketball tournament, 53-43. Maple Mountain and Westlake fought for the win in the state tournament which was played at Salt Lake Community college in Taylorsville. Westlake had the ball with seconds left in the game as they drove down the court for the win; the Lady Golden Eagles defense held tough and were able to stop the Thunder. At the end of regulation, the score was tied at 40-40.
On Monday, February 21, Maple Mountain runners came alive in Pocatello, Idaho, at the 2011 Simplot games. The Golden Eagles competed amidst many high schools from around the country. Overall, Maple Mountain cross country did very well.
The Utah FFA Association sponsored the Utah Leadership Conference in Provo on December 10 and 11. Maple Mountain FFA had 14 students who participated in the conference. These students spent the two days learning leadership skills including public speaking, teamwork, and confidence. This is a high energy workshop with great presenters, including past national and state FFA officers.
This week’s Maple Mountain Prep of the Week is sophomore wrestling star Grant LaMont. This year LaMont has been an excellent asset the Maple Mountain Wrestling team winning almost every match he has competed in, most recently winning the 4A state title at 130 pounds beating Payson’s Cole Ford in the championship match in a 5-0 decision. LaMont currently is ranked #2 in state at 130 pounds and is looking to defend his title next year.
February students of the month are Maddy McMurdie, Bradley Clawson, Susan Nelson, Kayla Adams, Channing Merrill, Nick Langford, and Sylvee Rucker.
Maddy McMurdie Is a sophomore at Maple Mountain. Her hobbies include hanging out with her friends and family, painting nails, taking pictures, shopping, and playing soccer. Maddy’s favorite subjects in school are Health and Child Development.
