Maple Mountain student body divided their unity temporarily today, as the question of which gender was better had to be resolved. Throughout the assembly, boys and girls competed in different activities to prove themselves. After some intense competition (and possibly some bribery), the girls were able to seize a narrow victory.

To start things off, the two groups performed dance numbers. Both sides did very well, but girls managed to impress the judges slightly more. Immediately after the dance off, an “ice melting contest,” --the rules to which weren’t very clear—was decisively won quickly by the girls. Following this display of pure manly strength was the eating contest, in which contestants had to swallow a sardine-cracker-cheese-shake before the other person. The girls won, but fortunately, nobody threw up their delicious beverage.

The three rounds Tug-Of-War immediately followed, which spurred some of the biggest controversies of the competition. The boys needed a win soon to keep up their morale; they obtained it by dominating the tug-of-war contest. In the end, the girls took home the historic first trophy of Maple Mountain Gender Wars.

The inaugural game of the Maple Mountain High School Softball program was played at Provo High on March 8th. The varsity girls batted first and lead-off batter Ashley Dunsmore (23) hit a double to center to get things going. With Dunsmore still on 2nd base, Chelsey Burns (34) crushed a double to the right center field fence, scoring the first RBI in Eagles Softball history! Burns went on to score in the first inning giving the Eagles a 2 - 0 lead. Mariah Peterson pitched an exciting first game and the Eagles had some great defensive plays to win the game by 1 point.

The Maple Mountain track and field team opened their season this past Tuesday, March 9, at Salem Hills High School. The day was a cold and rainy day, but our Maple Mountain track team was ready to compete despite the weather. Other schools at the meet were Salem Hills High School, Payson High School, and Uintah High School. Students from MMHS took the top spots in the boy’s 200M, the 800M, 400M, 1600M, 300M hurdles, 4X400, 3200M, Javelin, high jump, and long jump events. The girls took first in 100M, 400M, 800M, 200M, 3200M, and medley relay. These results show a very promising season for Maple Mountain track and field, a season that might mirror the Maple Mountain cross country. The Maple Mountain track and field team is the largest teams in its region despite being a new school. Maple Mountain is once again showing what its sports are made of.

Bryn Boogert
By: William Shelton and Kyrie Carpenter, MMHS Golden Eagle Globe

Bryn Boogert is a senior at Maple Mountain High School and is one of the student’s of the month for the month of March. Bryn was nominated by her teachers Mr. Cory Mendenhall and Mrs. Sherrie Dunford.  Music is her passion and she is involved in many different music classes at Maple Mountain High. She enjoys playing the cello, singing, playing the piano, listening to music, and reading.

As one can see Bryn is a huge fan of music, so much in fact, that after high school she plans on attending college and obtaining a degree in cello performance. After college she hopes to be able to teach cello lessons. Her favorite quote is “More important than where you’ve been is where you are, and more important than where you are going.”

Chelsey Burns
By:  Jordan Osborne and Jacob Henry, MMHS Golden Eagle Globe

Chelsey Burns was selected by Mrs. Kathryn Crandall to be one of Maple Mountain’s students of the month.

Some of Chelsey’s favorite hobbies include playing softball, hanging out with friends, boating with her family, and going to Disneyland.

Chelsey sees herself being a registered nurse and married to a wonderful person in the future.

Chelsey has a 4.0 GPA and some of her favorite school subjects are science and medical classes because she aspires to be a nurse someday and finds these studies fun and interesting.

When asked about a funny story that happened to her, Chelsey described a family vacation to Hawaii. As their family walked down the street and saw a guy that looked exactly like a statue. As they walked past him, he jumped and scared her and she screamed and laughed really hard was the funniest thing that ever happened to her.

Chelsey’s favorite quote is “Live in the moment, because every second you spend angry or upset is a second of happiness you can never get back.” This reminds her to always be happy and not get upset at little things.

Tori Nielsen
By: Cameron Spilker and Keaton Atkinson, MMHS Golden Eagle Globe

Tori Nielsen, junior, is one of MMH’S students of the month for March. Tori was nominated by her English teacher, Mr. Johnny Averett.  She is very nice and a good student, too. Tori’s favorite quote is, “Friends are made in the moments you say “Me Too”.” She really likes this quote because she makes friends easily.

Some of her favorite hobbies are playing softball, reading, and being with her friends and family. Her favorite part of summer is going on family vacations, especially to her family’s cabin. What keeps Tori different from everyone else? Having a 4.0 GPA, enjoying working out, and running with her Dad.

If Tori could have a conversation with anyone from history it would be Anne Frank. She would talk about what scared Anne most during the holocaust and how she kept hope.

Tori likes all of her classes in school, but she loves P.E. and Math the most. “After my other classes, it’s nice to be able to work out and not really have to think,” said Tori about her P.E. class. In five years Tori sees herself graduating from college, working, and coaching softball.

Zachary Fraser
By: Marshall Levi and Jessika Hilton, MMHS Golden Eagle Globe

Student of the Month Zachary Fraser Zach was nominated by his science teacher, Mr. Cory Green.

Zach’s favorite quote is by Eric Liddel, “In the dust of defeat, as well as the laurels of victory, there is glory to be found if one has done his best.”  This quote inspires Zach to always try to do his best.

When asked what makes him different than others, he responded, “I like running. Enough said.”

Zach said if he could have a conversation with anyone in history he would ask Eric Liddel how did he gather the courage to live his standards even though it probably cost him and England a gold medal.

It’s no surprise that his favorite subject is biology. Zach exclaims, “Biology is awesome!”

In five years, he sees himself training for the 2016 Olympic decathlon. His favorite hobbies include track and field and cross country.

Clark Stephens
By: Sarah Blancher & Marissa Clegg, Golden Eagle Globe

Clark Stephens is just one of MMHS students of the month for March. Clark was nominated by his social science teacher, Ms. Carolyn Swenson. His hobbies include reading, drawing, writing, taking pictures, and going on different trips. What makes him different from everyone else is, “I work doing search engine optimization for a large publicly-traded corporation called iMergent.  “He wants to pursue a career as an industrial engineer.   Clark has a 4.0 GPA and his favorite subject in school is science.

He says, “It happens all around us, every second of every day. It’s cool to find out why stuff works the way it does.”

Clark’s favoriteite quote is “Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.” And also “Smart people learn from mistakes, wise people learn from others mistakes.”   When asked why he liked these quotes, he tells “I love learning about history and seeing how you can improve with what mistakes I make myself.”

The funniest thing that has ever happened to Clark was, “I opened up a reeled-up fish tape.  All 500 feet of steel cord sprung out like a spring. I spent the entire day untying the steel knot.

He would like to see himself in five years as being married, and living in a small home here in Utah.  In addition, he wants to drive a car that runs off self-generated hydrogen.   If he could have any conversation with anyone in history it would be Edwin Hubble, Clark would ask him “How did you come up with the theory of Red Shift?”

Joshua Nelson
By:  Kierra Larsen and Marissa Clegg, MMHS Golden Eagle Globe

Joshua Nelson, senior, is one of Maple Mountain High School’s March students of the month. Joshua was nominated student of the month by Mrs. Mindy Hammond.  Joshua enjoys long boarding, running, and playing guitar.  He is very interested in instrumental music.  His favorite subject in school is photography.  Joshua says, “I like the freedom I have in my assignments.”

One of Joshua’s funniest moments was when his sister made cookies for him, but they accidently absorbed the scent dispenser from an Airwick Plug-in.  He didn’t want to make her feel bad, so he choked them down trying to keep a straight face and acted like he was enjoying them.

In five years he sees himself returning from a mission, going to college at BYU Idaho, and married. Joshua’s favorite quote is, “If you’re not getting older, you’re dead.” He says, “I like the positive attitude of not stressing about things you cannot change.”

Maple Mountain High held their first annual FFA Sweethearts Week culminating with an assembly on Friday, February 12, and a dance on February 13 in which Bridgett Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kirby Smith, was crowned 2010 Sweetheart with 1st attendant Jessika Hilton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Hilton, and 2nd attendant Katelyn Jacobson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stan Jacobson. Besides this event being part of a school-wide celebration of Valentine’s Day, electing a FFA Sweetheart became part of many FFA programs in the 1970s. Currently, few FFA Chapters actually elect “FFA Sweethearts,” but the Maple Mountain FFA Chapter decided to implement this tradition. Thirteen girls contended for the title of Sweetheart. Contestants competed in many fun activities including lamb catching, pie eating, interviewing, cake decorating, and an evening pageant. The week ended with a fabulous dance with many students attending and enjoying the evening. The girls that competed represented the clubs they are involved in at MMHS. Contestants were Heather Esplin, Ashley Phelps, Merika Olsen, Brigette Smith, Briana Cook, Jessika Hilton, Asia Bringhurst, Justine Davis, Kellie Orton, Jerika Baum, Shannon Davies, and Katelyn Jacobson.

Winners in the lamb catching contest were 1st place Ashley Phelps, 2nd Merika Olsen, 3rd Heather Esplin.

Winners in the pie eating contest were 1st Brigette Smith, 2nd Kellie Orton, tying for 3rd Heather Esplin and Katelyn Jacobson. These girls love chocolate pudding!

Winning the interview contest was 1st Briana Crook, 2nd Katelyn Jacobson, and 3rd Jessika Hilton. Our evening pageant was won by 1st Brigette Smith, 2nd Kellie Orton, and 3rd Ashley Phelps.

On Friday, February 12, following an exciting relay race involving roping and hay hauling of the contestants against the some of the faculty and staff of MMHS, cakes that were baked and decorated by the contestants were auctioned off to the audience. Thanks to Ty Tingey who shared his time and talent to this good cause. We auctioned 13 cakes raising about $700 to be donated to the American Red Cross for the Haiti Relief Effort. We appreciate all those who purchased these delicious cakes; they were worth the money! A big thank you to our supporters and sponsors--Mapleton Floral and MAD Screen Printing

MMHS ELLEVÉS PLACE 4TH AT STATE DRILL COMPETITION

MMHS Wins 4th Overall in State Drill Competition
Attributions:
Molly Brenchley, Advisor

On Friday, January 29, 2010, the MMHS Ellevés competed in their first ever State 4A Drill Team Competition held at UVU. The Ellevés placed 5th in the Military category, 4th in the Dance category, and 4th in the kick category. Overall, the Ellevés were the 4th place team. There were 15 4A schools competing in each category.

This could possibly be the first time a brand new school has placed in the top 5 at the State Competition. The Ellevés have had a very successful competition season—each of their routines has placed in the top 5 at every competition they have competed in this year. Very impressive for a first-year team!

Halie Bingham, a senior and President of the MMHS Drill Team, won 1st place in the State 4A Drill Down. She was also named to the State 4A Academic All-State Drill Team.

The Ellevés would like to thank everyone who has supported them at their competitions this year. We really appreciate all of our fans!
