SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzogovina – Taylor LaMont of Mapleton, Utah reached the medal round in Greco-Roman and placed fifth at 58 kg/127.7 lbs. at the UWW Cadet World Championships on Tuesday.
LaMont fell to 2014 Cadet World silver medalist Edgar Tamazyan of Armenia in the bronze-medal finals, 3-1. Tamazyan scored his three points in the first period, and held off an aggressive LaMont to secure the victory.
LaMont, who was competing in his third straight UWW Cadet Worlds, opened with a 4-0 win over Ivan Gaidarji of Moldova. He was defeated in the quarterfinals by 2014 Cadet World champion Amin Kaviyaninejad of Iran, 0-1. When the Iranian reached the finals, LaMont was pulled back into repechage. He defeated Georgi Iliev of Bulgaria, 12-4 in repechage to earn his spot in the bronze-medal round.
LaMont was a Junior National freestyle champion and Junior National Greco-Roman runner-up in Fargo this year.
The U.S. had three other wrestlers who won a match in the tournament but did not reach the medal rounds, Paul Bianchi of Two Rivers, Wis. at 54 kg/119 lbs., Dominick Demas of Columbus, Ohio at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Anthony Piscopo of Huntingdon Valley, Pa. at 100 kg/220 lbs.
Bianchi and Demas lost to finalists and were pulled back into repechage, but lost those matches and did not advance to a medal bout.
All of wrestlers who won matches for the USA placed in the top 10 of their weight, scoring team points for the USA. Piscopo placed seventh at 100 kg, Demas was ninth at 63 kg and Bianchi was 10th at 54 kg. The United States is tied in ninth place after the first day with 13 team points. Iran leads all teams with 29 points.
“I am proud of the guys. They wrestled hard today,” said U.S. coach Nate Engel.
