Dennis Randall, the Utah Chapter President of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge awarded Oliva Hansen a certificate and a medallion in recognition of her “stunning” and “historically correct and accurate” essay. The presentation took place at MMHS in the presence of her parents, other family members, and school administration. Last year, Olivia and sixty-five other Utah students submitted essays and were invited to attend the Spirit of American Youth Leadership Program. Held in Pennsylvania, this four-day conference brings together high school students from across the country to attend leadership workshops, mock congressional debates, and visit important historical sites in Philadelphia, including a tour of Independence Hall and the battle site at Valley Forge. Olivia submitted an essay about the nullification crisis of Andrew Jackson’s presidency, and the essay was one of seven essays out of sixty-six essays written by Utah students that was recognized not only by the Utah chapter, but also by the national board of directors of the Freedoms Foundation for its excellence. Well done, Olivia!
