Maple Mountain cross country attended its first region match and claimed both region titles for boys and girls as well as girls’ JV region title. The meet was on Monday, October 12. The six teams in the region (Payson, Uinta, Salem Hills, Spanish Fork, Springville, and MapleMountain) were all in attendance and ready to race. First to race was girls’ JV. Kyrie Carpenter took first overall with the next runner coming in thirty seconds later. MapleMountain JV girls easily took the region title; in fact eight of the ten top finishers of that race were from MapleMountain. The next race was the JV boy’s race, in which MapleMountain placed a close second in the region with Nathan Foutz, who came in third just seconds behind the leader.             The girls’ varsity was next in line for racing, and the Lady Golden Eagles took region as well. Salem Hills had the lead for most of the race, but the MapleMountain girls were able to push themselves to victory within the final half mile. The final score was Maple Mountain 31, Salem Hills 34, which proves just how close of a race it truly was. Maple Mountain’s top five girls were Kelsie Hadlock, who placed third overall with a time of 19:17, Hayley Knapp who placed fourth overall with a time of 19:44, Rachel Warnick who placed sixth overall with a time of 20:03, Chantel Johnson who placed tenth over all with a time of 20:25, and finally, Chaliece Jones who placed eleventh overall with a time of 20:32. Not only did girls take the varsity region title, but they won with one of their varsity girls, Ashley Phelps, not able to race.   Last week, Ashley sustained injuries from a car accident leaving her unable to compete. But, to show support for Ashley, all the MapleMountain players wrote “Phelps” on their left calf.             The final race was boy’s varsity and again MapleMountain took home the region title despite their top runner racing ill. This race was a close one as well with Springville right on the heels of the Maple Mountain boys. The top five finishers were Spenser Hanson who placed third overall with a time of 16:17 despite being sick, next came Holden Adams who place fourth overall with a time of 16:29, Zach Johnson placed sixth overall with a time of 16:38, Jonah Hadlock placed tenth over all with a time of 16:5;, and, finally, Lance Merrell who placed eleventh with a time of 16:52. The final score was Maple Mountain 35, Springville 43, who took second.   Although MapleMountain is a new high school, the Golden Eagles had what it took to reign as 2009 region champions. Congratulations to all cross country participants and their coach!
