Utah Valley Educator of the Week: Jethro Gillespie

Jethro Gillespie is an art educator at Maple Mountain High School in Spanish Fork. He was chosen as the Daily Herald's Utah Valley Educator of the Week.

Gillespie teaches art to 10th-12th grade students. He tries to take his students on field trips when he can, including to the Springville Museum of Art, Brigham Young University Museum of Art, and galleries in Salt Lake City and Park City. In 2015, he took a group to New York City. 

Gillespie has been involved with Art21 Educators for the past five years. Art21 Educators is a national professional development initiative that is interested in finding curricular ways to engage students with contemporary art in the classroom. 

Gillespie has received numerous awards, including the PEAK award from Nebo School District in 2016, the Utah Art Educator of the Near from NAEA and UAEA in 2013, the Utah High School Art Educator of the Year from UAEA in 2012, Teacher of the Year from Springville Jr. High in 2008.

He has a bachelor's and master's degree in art education from Brigham Young University, and is working on attaining his PhD in art education from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec.

Gillespie lives with his wife, Robyn, and their three kids in Spanish Fork. In his spare time he likes to make his own art projects, play with his kids and go hiking.
