Nebo high school students build a house

On the first day of school, students enrolled in Nebo’s building construction class leave the school grounds and head to an empty lot at 1073 West River Ridge Lane, Spanish Fork, UT  84660.  At that time, there was nothing but brown grass and some sage brush.   Now, seven months later, there is a beautiful 3,876 foot house that is close to completion.

How did the students do this?  Well, they started with the foundation and built up from there.  Students have received hands-on instruction from their teacher, Thomas Hawks, and  subcontractor and supplier help from the following companies:  Geneva Rock, Sunroc Building Materials, Associated Concrete Services, Elite Construction and Development, Big Sky Plumbing, Keith's Auto, Shandy Floyd Construction, Percy Johnson , Turner Heating and Air, Anytech Electric, Jones Paint and Glass, Stock Building Supply, Hansen Insulation, ClydeCo Building Supplies, Hawks Construction, Mountain Land Supply, Evans Trucking, Brundage Bone Concrete Pumping, Pickering Electric, All Star Sanitation, Dominion Engineering and Hansen Crane.

With aid from construction experts, students have learned the home building process.  Subcontractors, with the assistance of students in the class, laid the cement foundation, framed walls, installed trusses with the help of a crane, added shingles and installed windows.  The house still has some major work to be done, but it is scheduled for completion this May, 2011.

This home is located in south-west Spanish Fork in the secluded, quiet River Cove Subdivision.  Home features include 2339 of finished square feet including three bedrooms, two and a half baths, two car garage, nine foot ceilings, 2 x 6 exterior construction, vaulted ceilings, large door casings and baseboard, cased windows, three-tone paint, granite counter tops.  Exterior finishes will include brick, rock, and stucco with architectural shingles.  Included are a painted garage, built-in children’s playhouse, game/tv room and cold storage.

This is a great home with an upgraded kitchen, large master suite with a walk-in closet, separate shower, and jetted tub.  The main floor has a laundry room and family room with vaulted ceilings through-out and a full, partially-finished basement.

Charles Bailey, senior from Springville High says, “I’ve learned that it’s important that the foundation it right, before all the rest of the building can take place.  I’m interested in this field and I may pursue a general contracting license when I graduate.”

Selling price is $250,000.   Any proceeds from the sale of the home will go towards next year’s building construction class project.  Contact Roxann Hoffman, Nebo School District, 801-342-8000, for further information.
