MMHS Spotlight - Abby Taylor and Emma Hill

Submitted by tyler.lewis on

Being the school valedictorian or salutatorian is a huge honor. This year our valedictorian is Abby Taylor and our salutatorian is Emma Hill. To choose the two positions, it is traditionally based off of GPA and total credits taken. Sometimes it is also based off of co-curricular and extracurricular activities they have been a part of. Both were members of the cross-country team, Abby in her junior year and Emma this past year. Both students worked extremely hard not only this year, but all their years at MMHS. We are proud of our hardworking students here at Maple Mountain.

Abby Taylor got the highest rank for the graduating class of 2016. The valedictorian usually gives the valedictory speech at graduation. Valedictorian is chosen specifically to represent the graduating class. When asked how she felt about being the valedictorian, she answered, “I'm not really sure there is anything to feel about being valedictorian. It is just a title. It doesn't change anything that I have done or will do, but it does feel good to be validated for my hard work.” This year she participated in science olympiad. There are many students who have extremely high GPA and have taken many credits, but not many accurately represent the graduating class of 2016.

Emma Hill had the second highest rank in the graduating class and is placed next to this year’s valedictorian. The salutatorian gives the opening speech at graduation, or salutation. Emma says, it was never a goal for her to be the salutatorian, but she is proud of her accomplishment. She said she was really surprised when she found out she was the salutatorian. This year she was both on the cross-country team, and the band president. Emma Hill worked just as hard as Abby Taylor and deserves to be awarded salutatorian; both represent the best Maple Mountain has to offer.
