MMHS Ellevés Travel to New York City

The Maple Mountain High School Ellevés had the opportunity to travel to New York City, New York on February 28 – March 3, 2014.  The Ellevés were able to do a lot of different things in the short amount of time that they were there.

When they first arrived, they traveled to Battery Park to board a ferry to visit the Statue of Liberty.  They were also able to see Ellis Island from their ferry.  Ellis Island had received some damage from Hurricane Sandy, so some of the areas that were previously open to tours are now closed.  After they arrived back to Battery Park, they visited the 9/11 Memorial.  Even though the museum is not open yet, it was very humbling to visit the site and walk on the grounds.

The next day, the Ellevés toured the city, seeing much of upper Manhattan.  Some of the things they were able to see included Central Park, the LDS Temple, the Lincoln Center, St. John the Divine Cathedral, and the Morris-Jumel Mansion.   Later that afternoon, the team took classes at the Broadway Dance Center.  Then that evening they went to the Broadway musical, “Newsies”.  Probably one of the highlights of the trip was seeing this show and also meeting some of the cast afterwards.

Day three of the trip began with a backstage tour of Radio City Music Hall and the Ellevés were able to meet with a member of the world famous “Radio City Rockettes”.  Next, the Ellevés went to the “Top of the Rock”, which is an observation deck on the 70th floor of the GE Building in Rockefeller Center, one of the most popular Manhattan landmarks.   The afternoon was spent exploring Fifth Avenue shops, Times Square, Chinatown, and other popular New York City attractions.

Day four began with an early morning walk to Pearl Studios where the Ellevés met for a Disney workshop where they learned choreography from the musical “Newsies”.  The team had to sing and dance, which ended up making for a very fun workshop, especially since the team had seen the musical and the movement they were learning was movement they had seen in the show.

After the Disney workshop, the team walked to the Broadway Dance Center to take one more class before heading to the airport to travel back home.

All 23 members of the team went on the trip along with 15 chaperones.  It was an amazing trip and the team made a lot of memories that will last a lifetime.  The Ellevés would like to thank all those involved in making this trip possible.  It was an experience they will not soon forget.
