Members of the Maple Mountain High School Dance Company traveled to Cedar City, Utah, from October 7-9 to compete and perform in the dance competition at the Utah Shakespearean Festival. Under the direction of their dance teacher, Karla Palfreyman, their team took 3rd place in the Modern Dance Competition. The dance company also had the opportunity to learn additional dance techniques through workshops and seminars.

The dance was based on the poem, “As You Like It,” by William Shakespeare. The poem is about who we are as a person and what we are doing in the world. The dancers wore masks and during the dance number, then they took off their masks, that’s when they find out who they are and what they are doing.

The dance workshops and seminars taught the girls different dance techniques. The workshops helped the girls learn more about who they are as a dancer; it also gave them a change of heart and better endurance.

Katie Tanner, Dance Company Vice-President, would like to further her education in dance and become a dance teacher.

Kimbie Simmons commented on her future in dance, “To continue taking dance classes and be on a dance team in college.”

Amelia Pullman said that she would like to dance in college.
