MMHS Celebrates Success at Area Proficiency Award Judging

Submitted by tyler.lewis on

On January 23, the Area 5 FFA held their award judging. To compete, FFA students must have a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) that they work on throughout their FFA career. Proficiency awards reward those students who have an outstanding SAE in different categories. Four students from Maple Mountain submitted proficiency applications: Amanda Anderson, Equine Science; Daniel Jensen, Landscape Management; Shania Steele, Agricultural Sales; and Derek Tidwell, Forage Production. Three of the four students were selected as winners and will represent Maple Mountain at state on February 10.

Amanda helps teach the general public about horses. She has always had a love for horses and wants to share it with others. She found that giving riding lessons gave her the ability share her passion and make some money, too.  Each year she has taught two to four riders the fundamental basics on riding a horse.

Daniel works for a curbing company. His duties include site preparation, cement mixing, curb machine loading, and finish work. Daniel loves the feeling that comes after he has accomplished a project and made a home look better. He uses his skills to create beautiful landscapes by adding the needed curbing.

Derek Tidwell works on a 1,300-acre alfalfa farm. He spends long days on the tractor cutting, discing, raking, plowing, or chopping. He also helps with the production of alfalfa cubes. He can do minor maintenance and servicing of all equipment and can tell you anything you want to know about a tractor.

We congratulate these three on their success and wish them luck at state.
