Twelve Maple Mountain High girls have been competing all week for the title of “Sweetheart” 2011, they are:  Merideth Reynolds, Nicole Gledhill, Allyse Eldredge, Caitlin Nabahe, Jessie Raymer, Brenda Chandler, Ashley Lish, Bekah Ludlow, Nicole Simkins, Jacqueline Azero, Lillibete Salimbene, and Lauren Nabahe.

The contestants had a range of contests including cow milking, pie eating, flower arranging, cake decorating, and a relay race.

Sweetheart’s week is sponsored by Maple Mountain FFA and the proceeds go towards next year’s Festival of Trees which will be donated to Primary Children’s hospital.

Maple Mountain FFA kicked off Sweetheart’s week on Monday, February 7, with a pie eating contest held at lunch. The nominees for Sweethearts royalty were given a pie to devour. The contestants were judged on how much they could eat in the allotted time.  Bekah Ludlow was the proud winner of this contest.

On Tuesday, February 8, the nominees showed off their skills at cow milking, they competed to see who could fill up a plastic cup the fastest.  The girls got very dirty but had fun.  The winner of this contest was Jacqueline Azero.  Big thanks go to Prior Farms for letting us use their cows and also for teaching us more about the dairy industry.

At lunch on Wednesday, February 9, the nominees competed in flower arranging. They were given scores on their wiring and taping abilities, use of ribbon, design of the corsage, wear ability, and the originality of their design. The winner of this contest was Merideth Reynolds.

On Thursday, February 10, the nominees participated in a cake decorating contest. They brought an already baked cake and three cupcakes for the taste testing portion of the contest. They had an hour and a half to decorate the cake and the cupcakes, they were creative.   Ashley Lish was the winner of this contest. The cakes were made to be auctioned off at the assembly held on Friday.  Big thanks to Robert Pombo, Margaret Raine, and Christy Johnson for being our judges.

Concluding on Friday, February 11, was the Sweethearts assembly.  At the assembly the nominees participated in a relay race against a faculty member of their choice. In the race they had to rope a dummy, carry three bails of straw across the length of the gym to a stick horse; after they had complete the straw task, they were required to pick up the stick horse and ride it around the gym and then back to its original spot. The relay race was intense with the contestants being judged on their style. Even through the mishaps, the girls always had a smile on their face.  Meredith Reynolds kept a positive attitude as she completed the relay race in a wheel chair due to a knee injury.  The cake auction was a great success, our student body really pulled together to boost up the prices. The proceeds will be donated to Primary Children’s Hospital. We would like to extend our thank you to Wayne Cowley, Producer’s Livestock Auctioneer, who drove all the way from Salina to be at our cake auctioneer.

At the end of the assembly the girls were very excited to hear who won 2011 Maple Mountain Sweethearts royalty; 2nd runner up was Brenda Chandler, 1st runner up went to Bekah Ludlow and our 2011 Maple Mountain Queen was Merideth Reynolds.

All of the FFA’s hard work paid off at the dance on Saturday, it was a huge success and everyone had a great time.
